SLEEP AND WEIGHT

Did you know there is a possible link that is rising by each day?

If you have been a regular reader to this site, then you have learned by now that there are many links to your weight than you had ever previously imagined.

Today we will explore the links between the amount of sleep you get to gaining or losing weight.

There are certain things as listed in the above chart that show relationships between your rest and certain hormones in your body, and these hormones influence certain actions in the body.

We will look at 2 hormones LEPTIN and GHRELIN.

Doctors have established that both can influence our appetite.
The amount we sleep or don’t sleep has been shown, in studies, to affect the production of both these hormones.

Let’s examine the characteristics of both these hormones:

Ghrelin stimulates appetite , and is produced in the gastrointestinal tract.
When you do not get enough sleep your body reacts by increasing the levels of ghrelin, and this increases your appetite. As the levels rise higher, you feel the urge to eat more and more.
This increased eating creates a calorie abundance, which leads to more excess weight.
Ghrelin is akin to putting your foot on the accelerator for eating.

Leptin signals the brain when you are full, and is produced in fat cells.
When you do not get enough sleep your leptin levels decrease, this in turn stops your brain from receiving the signal that you are full and leads to over eating.
Leptin puts the brakes on your eating by creating a feeling of fullness.

When these two hormones are combined they cause a higher rate of people suffering from obesity.

In order to stabilize these hormones it is important that a person receives adequate rest. The norm that is still acceptable and recommended is at least 8-10 hours of restful sleep.

Sleep that is not restful (tossing and turning), light sleep, broken sleep is not considered adequate.

You need deep, rem (rapid eye movement) sleep.

Another problem with sleep deprivation is that people are usually more sedentary during the extra hours they spend not sleeping. They have a tendency to eat more during this time, and because of the high levels of ghrelin and low levels of leptin, they increase the incidences of obesity.

To summarize:

Leptin controls your feelings of being full and signals the body to stop eating.
Ghrelin controls your appetite by stimulating it.
Sleep deprivation increases gherin and decrease leptin.
It is important to get adequate rest, because it is one of the factors in controlling your weight.

Gum Disease-Weight-Is There A Link

Many people do not link Gum Disease and Weight Together

Is there a link?

Scientific studies show that certain lifestyles are contributors to the linking of gum disease and being overweight.

People maintain certain lifestyles that start out early on in their lives, that cause them to be susceptible to increased risks for certain health conditions.

Take a look at the following chart and notice the progression and where it leads.

chart showing gum disease causes

As you will notice, according to the chart, your risks for gum disease is increased by your lifestyle. Teens, as well as adults, who consume more calories than the body needs, usually are consuming a mixture of more fats and carbohydrate.

This leads to becoming over weight, and the more over weight you become, the more you settle into a sedentary role.

When a person consumes too many calories (energy) and that energy is not needed by the body, it causes the body to store it as fat and also increases the risk of diabetes.

One cause of diabetes is when the body enables insulin resistance.

Over weight people have a tendency to consistently expose their teeth to sugars and bacterias that create an environment that increases the risk for gum disease.

If a teen or adult becomes insulin resistant, risks are increased for type 2 diabetes.

Anyone with diabetes will be at a 2 to 4 times greater risk for developing Gum Disease (gingivitis and periodontitis) than non-diabetic patients.

Insulin resistance (Type 2 diabetes) may be the link between obesity and other inflammatory health conditions.

Controlling Your Weight, through exercise and proper diet will help you stay healthy.

and as always

Good Oral Hygiene and Visiting A Dentist Regularly will help in the treatment of Gingivitis and Periodontitis.

You Have That Special Tattoo Or You’re Thinking About Getting That Special Tattoo.

TATTOOS AND WEIGHT

Getting a Tattoo
is a important decision if you do not already have one. Some designs are very costly and time consuming. You undergo a certain amount of pain, and that pain is increased depending on the area of your body, that you choose.

Some are masterpieces to be admired, with very intricate designs, in opposed to ones, that are just simple names and numbers.

You want to insure, that these works of art, are not destroyed from their original glory due to weight loss or weight gain.

A few questions that may arise:

How does your fluctuation in weight affect your piece of art?

Should you get one if you are currently on a diet?

Will exercise and weight lifting affect your design?

Will fast weight loss affect your design more than a slower drop in pounds?

Are certain designs affected more?

Will the places that your designs are located affected more than other spots?

Will Pregnancy alter your Tattoo?

Places least effected

Your back usually, at least the upper area, seems to withstand changes from rapid fluctuations in weight and age.

Ankles, Hands, Wrists, Feet, Upper Back and a few more places have a tendency to not change for most people, too drastically.

Your sides seem not to do so well, but you could get your back done first if you are impatient, and then go on your weight loss program, afterwards you could get your sides done, if you are including them in your design.

Weight gain or loss effect

When you lose weight your skin will systematically tighten up and your design will complement this by becoming tighter.

When you gain weight, there’s a possibility that your tattoo could fade or discolor.

These changes should be taken into consideration, when you are deciding on the area of the body you choose.

Tattoos that are located on locations of the body, that have the tendency to store more fat and are susceptible to stretching of the skin, show signs, that they are more likely to be affected by weight changes, up or down.

Pregnancy and rapid weight or muscular gain will often cause stretch marks.

Pregnancy, definitely has been seen to alter tattoos on the stomach, usually permanently. Stretch marks can permanently damage the appearance of your designs.

Usually when men exercise and use weights, they have to noticeably change to alter a piece on their arm.

The end result, that is usually seen is that the tattoo may be lighter and/or distorted somewhat.

If genetically your skin can expand and shrink from weight fluctuations, without losing it’s elasticity, it will have less impact, if any, on your inking.

On the safe side you could just choose a location that will not get stretched too much regardless of any body changes. For some women added areas of less impact are the high chest areas.

Quick Summary

When weight loss or gain is possible these variables need to be addressed:

A. Be aware of the possible amount of weight that could be lost or on the other hand, gained,

B. Be aware of how fast you lose or gain weight, because this will have a direct affect on how your art work will respond.

C. Decide on the part of the body it will be located, for the type of design you choose, and how that part of the body is affected by weight loss or gain.

D. Always be aware of how intricate your tattoo design you choose is, because this will factor in the cost, location and the likelihood of changes in your body structure.

Smoking and Diet-Effects

Smoking is bad for you and everyone has heard this time and time again.

Excess weight is bad for you and everyone has heard of this time and time again also.

smoking and diet-teen picture

Many people have found out through studies and experience that smoking increases your metabolism (Nicotine, one of the many components of smoke from cigarettes, directly increases a persons energy expenditure by stimulating the central nervous system.) and helps to burn calories, which in turn, decreases weight gain.

There was a study that was done in 2007 that showed, that teenage girls who considered losing weight took up smoking to aid in losing fat.

When it comes to smoking cessation many people experience increased weight gain soon after they quit smoking.

The bottom line is that you should never use smoking to lose weight due to the enormous amount of health issues that smoking could cause and/or aggravate.

If you smoke and you decide to quit, be aware of the risks of weight gain and plan on controlling and monitoring your diet.

People who are already dealing with weight issues, and quit smoking, must concentrate on calorie expenditure and incorporating exercise in their lifestyle.
