What was once an obscure term known only by a handful of people, has become a term everyone would most probably have come across today – cellulite.

It is every woman’s bane, a topic when it comes to celebrity gossip, and a new imperfection a plastic surgeon can promise you to get rid of. What exactly is it?

People tend to think of cellulite as fat deposits on the thighs, hips and buttocks. This is close, but not accurate. In fact, Cellulite is the lumpy substance (often described as cottage cheese) that is commonly found on the thighs, stomach, and buttocks. Fats are not to be given full credit for the existence of cellulite.

The word ‘cellulite’ is a combination of the French word for ‘cell’. The suffix ‘-ite’ means ‘disease’. Cellulite is formed when connective tissues beneath the skin (responsible for the shape of fats) become weak and deformed due to poor blood circulation. Connective tissues are made up of fibers, and they are the essential link between your skin and your muscles. As a result of the deformed shape, fats cannot be properly absorbed into the bloodstream. At the same time, swelling is caused due to the excessive fluids building up. The result of this is a lumpy irregular surface.

In order to know what would help it, we must explore several causes. The most common cause cited is genetics. Women’s fat cells and connective tissues are different in a way any weight gain would tend to manifest itself quickly.

Call it unfair but Men have generally thicker outer skin to conceal all that. Other causes include hormonal effects during puberty or due to stress, individual diet, and fashion. Fashion is a major contributor to the poor blood circulation, which causes cellulite to be formed. Undergarments have shrunk from Grandma’s old Pantaloons to tight smaller panties, which stretch across the middle of the butt – where cellulite is most commonly found. Thus, changing one’s lifestyle or fashion might help prevent the accumulation of cellulite.

How about the cure for Cellulite?

Well, today there are several ways to go about fighting cellulite.

The first is turn to therapeutic treatments, which are widely available on the market today. Step into any beauty store and ask for assistance, or read reviews on products to decide which is best for you. However, note that this is not a one-time treatment that would eliminate cellulite once and for all. If application stops, cellulite may just return. It must be a daily commitment on your part to religiously use these products.

The second would be oral treatments, however medications have not proved to be really effective.

The last and perhaps most effective method by far would be Endermology. This is done by a machine that uses a technique similar to the process of rolling out dough to make cookies. This would tackle the problem areas and smoothen it out. This highly effective method is not without its drawbacks. It is very costly and once again requires return visits for maintenance. The process can also get uncomfortable and result in bruising.

Another year has passed and many of us have put on extra pounds. Many of us have stood in that mirror of shame and have done nothing. Or even worse we have stood in front of that mirror of shame and have given up hope, additionally becoming complacent with our physical state.

If you are talking about that excess amount of weight you have put on, that makes you feel uncomfortable, increasing your likelihood of heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and a host of other physical ailments, then it is a terrible thing.

On the lighter side, think about how much money you could save, when you buy less food (because you no longer eat pass the point of fullness, when you buy your clothes a few sizes smaller (because big men and big women clothes cost big money), when you spend less on medicine and prescriptions (because overweight usually is a close friend of poor health).

2009 Should and Will be your year to make your weight loss resolutions your way of life.

Your lifestyle choices will directly effect what you do and need to do to make that Mirror of Shame a Mirror of Pride.

Believe In Yourself and what you will accomplish.

Take that first step but most importantly keep stepping.
