Doctors recommend that overweight people lose weight for the health benefits it provides more than the physical aesthetics. However, when you lose weight you will also feel and look great, so its benefits are twofold if not more. There are many health problems that are more likely to happen to those who are overweight. Reading about these issues may be enough to help you decide to go on a diet and get your weight under control.

Heart Disease

When it comes to the leading cause of death for both men and women, heart disease and stroke take the top spots.

This is because people who are overweight typically have high blood pressure and this is one of the biggest risk factors for people who experience heart disease or stroke. People who are not overweight do not have as high an incidence of heart disease and stroke as those who are.

High levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood are also problematic and seen frequently in those who are overweight. Sudden death may occur from heart disease even if symptoms have not been present in the past. Losing even 10 pounds can reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke.

An over weight body requires an extra-large amount of blood. Your heart has to pump more blood than it did when ou were thinner. As the scale increases the heart, instead of beating more often, grows slightly larger so it can move a bigger supply of blood with each beat. This increased flow often leads to high blood pressure, which is one of the major causes of heart disease.

Your heart can suffer from this extra workload, even if your blood pressure doesn’t climb, Imagine a balloon that has been stretched out of shape it becomes weaker. As the chambers of your heart grow larger, they begin to lose some of their squeezing power. These causes the chamber to not completely empty themselves with each beat, and when this happens the blood begins pooling in your heart, increasing your likelihood of developing congestive heart failure.

Excess body fat

Can lead to increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Blunt the effects of insulin, making you vulnerable to Type 2 diabetes which can threaten the heart.

Can result in high levels of LDL cholesterol and increased artery-clogging.

Can increase your risk for suffering a heart attack or a stroke due to cholesterol sticking to your arteries.

This was a scary wake up call. I had not read this before but it is amazing to learn. Time to get in shape and keep the old ticker properly taken care of. A big heart is not good if it is physically obese.
