2. Are you overweight?

If you answered “yes” to both of these questions then it is extremely important for you to focus on losing some weight.

It is not just about looking good anymore; you need to lose the weight to help control your blood sugar and to improve your health. Beyond that, you will also feel better than you have in years and some people are able to control their diabetes through a healthy diet and exercise.

Weight loss for diabetics
is not the same as for other people. That is because everything from the foods you eat to the exercise you engage in will affect your blood sugar.

It is important to keep your blood sugar levels stable so your doctor will need to help you develop a workout and diet plan that will help you lose weight while keeping your blood sugar and insulin levels in check.

So, what should a diabetic eat?

Diabetics will do best eating a diet that is high in complex carbohydrates that are not refined. This means whole wheat bread over white bread, vegetables like squash or lima beans over potatoes or corn, and foods high in fiber content like lentils, black beans, and the like. Sugar should be avoided because it will not help you regulate your weight or your blood sugar. It is best to eliminate it altogether and only enjoy sweets on your birthday or maybe at Christmas.
