Any type of movement could be considered exercise because it uses the body’s muscles. All sports are obviously exercise, like tennis, basketball, soccer, but other activities like running, walking, and swimming are also exercises.

Different muscles groups are used depending on the exercise that is taking place. Some exercises work to keep the body moving while others work to keep the body performing a certain task. Exercise simply means that the muscles are being activated.

When your muscles are being used for exercise they become more demanding than in simple activities. The muscles need more support from the body and during hard exercise the entire body works to support the muscles and in some cases parts of the body shut down so that the energy they use can go to the muscles.

And What Exactly Is ATP

Your muscles need energy to keep moving and exercising. So, they use ATP, adenosine triphosphate, to provide energy to the muscles. Your muscles literally burn the ATP and during this time there are several things that are necessary. First, your muscles need oxygen because ATP is produced by consuming oxygen. It is necessary to have an adequate source of oxygen for this chemical reaction to occur.

Next, the chemical reactions generate metabolic waste including lactic acid and carbon dioxide. The muscles need to be able to eliminate these wastes. Finally, muscles that are being exercised need to be able to eliminate excess heat. When you exercise your muscles get hot and it is important to get rid of the extra heat. As long as you exercise your muscles will create ATP, meaning that oxygen must be supplied, heat must be regulated, and waste must be removed.

The harder you exercise the more work your body must do to keep up with the ATP production, temperature control, and removal of waste. When the body cannot keep up with the level of exercise then your body will simply stop you.
